January 14: Will we ever learn?

Scripture:  Genesis 30:1-31:14

Observations:
As I began reading today in Genesis 30, it was a flashback to a few days ago when Sarah gave Abraham her maid so that she could have children.  The sins are the same – only the names have changed.  I couldn’t help but think of the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20 – the same sin problems that we have read about throughout Genesis, and have heard Jesus teach about in the sermon on the mount and through the book of Matthew, and the same sins we struggle with today.  Adultery & sexual sin, lying, murder, stealing or cheating others, pride, selfishness, jealousy & coveting/desiring what other have that we want.

 - While we are all personally responsible for our own actions and our own sin, there are certainly implications of how our sin can have consequences that affect others and sometimes may lead others into temptation to sin.  Laban’s sin of deception & lying (and stealing 7 years of Jacob’s work!) is a good example – In a way, it had an affect on Jacob (I can only imagine he reacted in  great anger) and then Jacob choosing to sin and take 2 wives, comitting adultery, which in turn spiraled out of control in the sin of Rachel and Leah and of their maids, and undoubtedly throughout all of their children and family relationships.

 - As we read through the story of these 2 sisters, Rachel and Leah, the sin becomes consuming, greater and greater as they use their maids as surrogate mothers to compete with each other and for the love of their husband and time with him (verses 3,7,9,12).

 - God does not approve of or reward us when we sin. Polygamy (more than 1 wife) was never part of God’s plan – He designed marriage from the beginning as 1 man and 1 wife (Genesis 2:24), and obviously, like any other sin, we see the immense relational strife that comes as a result of sin and broken relationship with God and with others.

Application
My sin has great potential to hurt and affect not only me, but my wife, my kids, my parents, my extended family, my co-workers, my friends, my church family.

More importantly, as a follower of Christ, I should recognize that the greatest hurt my sin causes is in the heart of God, and of His son Jesus Christ, who died and suffered for our sins.

Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him (Christ) the iniquity of us all.

Prayer:
God, please forgive me for being like Laban, Jacob, Rachel and Leah – selfish, sinful, causing grief to you and pain to others.  Give me wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 3:13-15) of your desires for me as I read and learn your word.  Help me to consider every word I speak, every thought I think, every motive and action.  God make me more like Christ everyday as you refine me like silver in a furnace, taking away the imperfections in my life and replacing them with more of what you desire – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, compassion, humility, obedience, thanksgiving, praise and worship and so much more.

    Scripture
Psalm 7:8 Lord, judge the people. Lord, defend me because I am right, because I have done no wrong. God Most High.

    Observance
It is the Lord’s place to judge. But when I am right with the Lord, and shining my light, others may feel conviction, just by my presence. I am shining my light and that just reveals the darkness they are living in. Therefore they associate me with judgment, when it is not I but God’s judgment they feel, because I reflect the Lord in my life.

    Application
I need to persevere beyond the worlds standards of morality, and never compromise my biblically based principles of living. If my presence causes people to feel conviction, than it just means that I am shining my light and right with the Lord.

    Prayer
Lord, You know my heart. I thank You for giving me Your Word to read. Your Words, Lord, they comfort me. I can find no true comfort and peace anywhere else. If my presence convicts people, that just means that they see You Lord, in me. As long as I am right with You, than I am just fine. Let them call me judgmental, but they know and I know that the only true judge is You Lord. And if I being somewhere causes someone to feel judged it is only because You dwell in me and their own conscience convicts them.

    Scripture
    Genesis 15:6, Matthew 9:18-38

    Observation
Back in Genesis 15:6 it say’s that Abraham believed the Lord. And the Lord accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God. In Matthew 9:18-38 in v. 18 the man said “but if you come and lay your hand on her, she will live again.” V. 21 say’s she was thinking, “If I can just touch His clothes, I will be healed.” V.22 Jesus said, “You are made well because you believed.” Once again in v. 29 says “because you believe I can make you see again.” Now if those versus don’t indicate how important faith is, I don’t know what will. Just like when we pray, I do not believe in the power of prayer, but in the power of God. That when you come to Him believing He can and will. He will, if it is in His will for your life. When I was in small group with elementary at 11:30 service, we were talking about when Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt and they were thirsty and all of the people were complaining. Moses prayed to God rather than complain. He struck the rock and water began flowing. When we broke off into small group, I had about ten children, and when I asked why water came from the rock, they all answered, because Moses hit it with the stick. But that is not correct, it was because he prayed believing, God would provide, and then God did. The water came from God, not the rock. God provided because of Abraham’s Faith. Then when I was talking to my own children about Matthew 9. I asked them how and why did these people get healed? Their answers were, “because she touched His clothes,” or “because Jesus touched her” or “because Jesus touched their eyes.” But every one of these incidents were healed by belief that Jesus could heal them.

    Application
I must have faith and believe.

    Prayer
Please Lord help me to have faith, give me the strength that is takes to put my trust in You, rather than the people, or things of this world. I love You Lord, thank You for everything.

    Gen. 27:1-28:22

I thought it was crazy, all of the deceit that was taking place. Then in addition God blessed the whole thing. Then I started thinking back to how Abraham on different occasions was deceitful and how he ended up being blessed and benefited by his deceit. Was it really, Jacob, Abraham, Sara or Rebekah at all that was running the show, or was it God all along orchestrating things to happen the way that He planned them to happen? I believe that is the case. I believe that because these people were God fearing obedient servants of the Lord, that it was them allowing God’s will in their lives and that is why they were blessed in those instances. We can learn a lesson from this. It is not that we can be deceitful and dishonest and get away with it. But that if we are honoring God with our lives and living God’s will for our lives rather than our own will for us. God will bless and honor that. God is always trying to teach us, all throughout scripture. I know that in Bible study a lot of people were disturbed at the fact that Lot was willing to give up the two virgins in order to save the two men. But I believe that is once again had to do with faith and obedience to God. Lot knew the men were sent from God, and he respected and understood what this meant. We are to put God first in everything, and by offering the virgins rather than the men of God, Lot was putting God first. Just my own thought and opinion. Praise God that we have His Word, to instruct us and give us guidance in our lives.

    Awesome post Mark…

As I read on this day I found it hard to really fathom all that was going on. Sometimes just reading what is happening doesn’t always become real to us unless we put ourselves there.

I sat & thought about my sister and all the times I was in competition with her. How jealous I was of her, and how sometimes I even hated her.. Today, how much I love her, pray for her and what I need to change in my life to accurately reflect my love for my family.

I love that scripture can be taken and applied to every area of our lives. I can read it and always find something in my life to compare it to. It obviously does not match exactly but if we open up our hearts God will show us just what it is He wants us to focus on. He will reveal to us how to apply His word to our lives so we can change and grow to be like Jesus.

On this day of reading God took me back to my childhood. I am Rachel and Leah.. A jealous, hateful, selfish, sister. God though, knows my heart as He created it. In His eyes I am a hurting, broken hearted child who is ALWAYS loved by Him.
Just like in the days prior reading when I was Sarah as she laughed at God when He revealed to her he was going to do something great for her. Oh, how many times I doubt God & forget just how real He is.

God’s word is REAL & ALIVE today.. These words on paper come alive as God whispers in our ear how he wants to use them to penetrate our lives, to heal our every wound.

May we read it and be still as God pours His love and spirit into every part of our lives.
